5 Things That Can Affect The Cost Of Your Heavy Equipment Transport

Transitioning heavy equipment can be one of the biggest challenges of having a mobile construction business. Thankfully, there are heavy equipment transportation services around to help move these massive machines from place to place. Several factors can affect the price of such a haul. Here is a look at some of those factors.

The Size of the Equipment Being Moved

The larger a piece of heavy equipment is, the more expensive it will be to transport it. Not only are larger pieces more of a challenge to load and position in place, but they also require more fuel to tow. For instance, a piece of equipment that weighs several tons will require the towing vehicle to use more fuel during the transportation process than something small.

The Equipment Necessary to Move Your Equipment

Different pieces of equipment can require different types of transport equipment for the transport process because these massive machines can have all kinds of shapes and sizes. For instance, something like a large bulldozer may need a trailer that allows for side loading and a semi to haul the equipment. If there is something particularly unique required for the move, such as a hoist or crane to actually lift something onto a hauling platform, it can be more expensive for the transport.

The Complexity of the Pickup or Delivery

It is not uncommon for some heavy equipment pieces to be especially challenging to load and unload because of their size or stature. For instance, if you are having a large crane moved, the transport service may have to arrange for the partial dismantling of the equipment before it can actually be moved.

The Distance the Equipment Is Being Moved

Naturally, a longer haul is going to be more expensive and a shorter haul will be more conservatively priced. Keep in mind that some companies do charge flat rates up to a certain distance and then they charge per-mile beyond that. Other companies may charge per mile no matter how short or long the distance, so there can be great variances in prices from company to company.

The Permits Required for the Transport

If something is especially large, there can be permits required to transport a piece of equipment through an area or over a certain road or highway. If the transportation service has to obtain these permits, you can expect to pay more for the service overall.
